Wall (2001)
The photographic project, Wall, broadens the perspective of the narrative Chapter Six – Racism using the physical structure of a building as a metaphor for institutional racism. What appear to be details from architectural photographs, devoid of people, challenge the viewer to think about what happens behind these seemingly innocent walls. The photograph, the Crown Prosecution Service, highlights the scratched institutional silver door handle, encouraging us to consider the way in which institutions are built, and who they are intended to serve. The series asks what happens when a black individual(s) enters these spaces, will they be treated in the same way as a white person, is the handle to the building in fact a symbolic wall?
